Voice to Parliament for First Nations People

22 March 2023

A message from the Hon Peter Malinauskas MP, Premier of South Australia

At 11am this Sunday, 26 March there will be a special sitting of Parliament and it is set to be a truly historic day for our state, and indeed our country.

Parliamentarians will be gathering to vote on the establishment of Australia’s first Voice to Parliament for First Nations People.

And the people of South Australia are being invited to come along, show their support and share in this moment of history.

Everyone is invited to gather on the steps outside Parliament and watch the final vote on the big screens and I encourage you, your students and your school community to join us on this historic occasion.

This will be followed by a special ceremony on a stage outside Parliament, as well as musical performances by First Nations artists.

More information can be found on the Facebook event.

The establishment of a First Nations Voice to Parliament is the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of work, extensive consultation with First Nations communities and the broader community around the state led by the Commissioner for First Nations Voice Dale Agius.

The Local First Nations Voices would be established through an election process. Elected members

The First Nations Voice to Parliament will deliver a connected, direct and independent line of communication for First Nations people to South Australia's Parliament and the government.

In Parliament, this will mean addressing particular bills of interest to First Nations people, making an annual address to Parliament and providing reports to Parliament.

I look forward to the First Nations Voice working collaboratively with Parliament and Government to deliver better outcomes for First Nations people and our state more broadly.

I hope to see you and others from your school community there on Sunday.
